I think PoC is rather a „no regret“ step with external DS consultants („I’ll pay you a little, show me what you can do“). Agree that internal projects should aim to reach production. Unless you hit some fatal roadblocks along the way.

What is effective is skipping a proof of concept (POC), which tends to never leave the data scientist’s laptop, and focusing on creating a minimum viable product (MVP).
